Three from Mystic Valley Named to CAC Softball All Star Team
Three members of the Mystic Valley Charter School’s softball team were named to the Commonwealth Athletic Conference all star team. The three girls are Joan Kinnon, Sara Marraccino and Rachel Tortora.
Rachel Tortora is the youngest of the three. Although only a freshman, she led the team with a .569 batting average. Sophomore slugger Sara Marraccino led the team in home runs and batted .441. Joan Kinnon, the oldest member of the trio, hit .393 during her junior year and played exceptional defense at shortstop and was a constant threat on the base baths.
The three girls were instrumental to the team’s tournament run. Together they account for more than one half of the teams hits, home runs and runs batted in.

Mystic Valley Lower School Sports Awards Banquet
The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School recently held a sports banquet honoring the Mystic Valley students who played at sub-varsity levels in several sports. Certificates were given to each student athlete. Individual awards were given to the team MVP. Each coach also presented the player on the team who best demonstrated the ideals of Mystic Valley athletics with the Eagle award for that team.

Mystic Valley Holds Varsity Sports Awards Banquet
The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School held its annual Varsity Sports Banquet Thursday night at Anthony’s in Malden. The event capped off a very successful year for Mystic Valley sports that included: an undefeated Commonwealth Athletic Conference Champion swim team that featured Conference MVPs Pat Kinnon and Alyssa Savarino; Taylor Roseen’s recognition as the CAC’s Offensive Player of the Year award in lacrosse; multiple tournament appearances and a host of athletes being named to post season all star teams.
Joseph Vaverka received the biggest award of the evening, the Eagle Award, which is given to the student athlete who best demonstrates the character of the Mystic Valley Student Athlete. In presenting the award Athletic Director, Pete Connolly, said that Joe “was the consummate leader both on and off the field of play. He was a captain on both the cross country and baseball teams. Joe was a leader to the underclassman during our off season conditioning practices”. Joe also earned All Star recognition as a pitcher on the baseball team this year. Joe’s baseball coach, Chris Bauer, added “I am fortunate to have had the privilege of working with Joe throughout his high school years. He is an extremely hard working young man who does an exceptional job of setting the example for his peers. Joe is absolutely deserving of this award as he is an individual who does things the right way in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.”
All of the players from each varsity team were introduced to the capacity crowd by their coaches. The coaches then presented individual awards to the Most Improved Player on the team the MVP for each award and the Eagle award to the student on that team that best embodied the ideals of Mystic Valley.

Two Mystic Valley Baseball Players Named to All Star Team
Mystic Valley Senior Joe Vaverka and Sophomore Joe Foley were both recently named to the Commonwealth Athletic Conference All Star team.
Joe Vaverka led the team in four separate offensive categories. He had a .348 batting average, 23 hits, 18 runs scored (tied with Foley) and 19 RBIs. He also had a triple and 2 homeruns. In addition to being a force at the plate, he had 3 wins on the mound. Coach Chris Bauer said that “Joe Vaverka did a great job of providing leadership as a senior captain. He showed up every day ready to work hard and improve. Joe leads by example and did a great job of showing our young team how to do things right both on and off of the field.”
Joe Foley had a .306 batting average, 18 runs scored (tied for team lead), 5 doubles, 4 HR's (led team), and 15 RBI's. Foley also led the team in strikeouts as a pitcher with 36 K's in 35 innings of work. “Joe Foley has a ton of potential and needs to keep working at it. He had a great year at the plate. Joe will be expected to take on more of a leadership role over the next two years and help take the program to the next level.” said coach Bauer.
